This volume documents the speeches from the academic memorial service honoring the historian Thomas Großbölting (1969–2025), who died in a train accident in Hamburg on February 11, 2025. Thomas Großbölting had been Director of the Forschungsstelle für Zeitgeschichte in Hamburg (FZH) and Professor of Modern/Contemporary History in the Department of German History at the University of Hamburg since 2020. Organized by the Faculty of Humanities, its Department of History, and the FZH, the event demonstrated the profound impact the historian had on Hamburg during his brief years as a scholar, colleague, and university professor. In addition to two introductory remarks and four lectures illuminating different aspects of Thomas Großbölting’s work, the recollections of ten former students and doctoral candidates attest to the exceptional nature of this academic mentor.
