Synopsis

This volume documents the speeches given at the ceremony marking the reopening of the Philosophers’ Tower in April 2024. Since its completion in 1962, the 14-story high-rise has been a landmark on the Von-Melle-Park campus. Due to necessary internal renovations, the tower had to be closed and completely vacated in 2017. It was not until six years later that students and staff moved back from a temporary building to the Philosophers’ Tower, which had been renovated in accordance with historic preservation guidelines, and thus back to the central campus. Four of the eight departments of the Faculty of Humanities located in the Philosophers’ Tower were affected. The speeches at the reopening address the history and architecture of the striking building; they also focus on the people who study and work here and show that local contexts and circumstances are of considerable importance for their everyday lives.
