Open Access policy for books

The Open Access publication service Hamburg University Press, provided by the Hamburg State and University Library, supports open access in accordance with its Open Access Policy and its Guidelines on Licensing.

The books published by Hamburg University Press appear simultaneously and with identical pagination as a high-quality print edition and as a freely accessible and reusable digital edition (Gold OA standard). The publications undergo a quality assurance process. Publication fees (Book Processing Charges - BPCs) are charged to cover the costs incurred during publication. These are usually borne by the authors. It is possible for third parties, such as publishers of a publication series, to cover the costs of BPCs (Diamond OA).

Licensing

All books are published under the Licence Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) or Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 - ShareAlike International (CC BY-SA 4.0) license. This license allows third parties to copy, redistribute, remix, transform and combine publications with other works, even commercially, as long as  appropriate credit to the licensor is given. The CC-BY license thus significantly promotes the visibility and reach of publications and enables legally compliant and free reuse, even in combination with other CC-licensed works. With the CC-BY-SA license, redistribution is only possible under the same license terms.

The metadata and the abstract written by the author are released under CreativeCommons Zero (CC0). This release enables the exchange of metadata between different services and service providers. This serves the visibility and findability of the publication.

Copyright

The authors grant the publication service only simple rights of use that are required for the agreed publication. This primarily includes the right of first publication under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license or the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 - ShareAlike International (CC BY-SA 4.0) license.

It is the responsibility of the authors to obtain all necessary copyright authorisations for the use of third-party materials in their publications.

Self-archiving

Authors may deposit their work in all versions of the publication process in an institutional or specialised repository as well as on their personal or institutional websites. This includes preprints, manuscripts accepted for publication (Author's Accepted Manuscript/Postprint) and published articles (Publisher's version).

After successful publication, authors should link from the deposited version to the published work on the publication service website using a digital object identifier (DOI).

By self-archiving their publications, authors actively support and promote open access and the dissemination of their research.
