The Journal of Current Chinese Affairs is published by the Institute of Asian Studies at the GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies in Hamburg in collaboration with the National Institute of Chinese Studies (NICS) of the White Rose East Asia Centre (WREAC) in the UK. The GIGA, formerly the German Overseas Institute, is a Hamburg-based research institute focused on political, economic and social developments in Africa, Asia, Latin America, North Africa, and the Middle East. Through a unique combination of area and comparative area studies, the GIGA examines not only the issues and challenges facing these specific regions but also new developments in North-South and South-South relationships. The GIGA is the largest German research institute for area and comparative area studies. It is also among the largest in Europe. WREAC, established jointly by the Universities of Sheffield and Leeds, is funded by the British government under the Language-Based Area Studies Initiative to promote research and research training on East Asia. Leeds and Sheffield Universities are together the UK's largest provider of undergraduate teaching and MA training in modern Chinese and Japanese studies, and WREAC is a major centre for research on East Asian societies and cultures.
